Ten Commandments The Message Bible

Exodus 20:1-17

God spoke all these words: I am God, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of a life of slavery.

  1. No other gods, only me.
  2. No carved gods of any size, shape, or form of anything whatever, whether of things that fly or walk or swim. Don’t bow down to them and don’t serve them because I am God, your God, and I’m a most jealous God, punishing the children for any sins their parents pass on to them to the third, and yes, even to the fourth generation of those who hate me. But I’m unswervingly loyal to the thousands who love me and keep my commandments.
  3. No using the name of God, your God, in curses or silly banter; God won’t put up with the irreverent use of his name.
  4. Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Work six days and do everything you need to do. But the seventh day is a Sabbath to God, your God. Don’t do any work—not you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your servant, nor your maid, nor your animals, not even the foreign guest visiting in your town. For in six days God made Heaven, Earth, and sea, and everything in them; he rested on the seventh day. Therefore God blessed the Sabbath day; he set it apart as a holy day.
  5. Honor your father and mother so that you’ll live a long time in the land that God, your God, is giving you.
  6. No murder.
  7. No adultery.
  8. No stealing.
  9. No lies about your neighbor.
  10. No lusting after your neighbor’s house—or wife or servant or maid or ox or donkey. Don’t set your heart on anything that is your neighbor’s.

Ten Commandments Common English Bible

Exodus 20:1-17

Then God spoke all these words:

  1. I am the LORD your God who brought you out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
You must have no other gods before me.
  2. Do not make an idol for yourself—no form whatsoever—of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth. Do not bow down to them or worship them, because I, the LORD your God, am a passionate God. I punish children for their parents’ sins even to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me. But I am loyal and gracious to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.
  3. Do not use the LORD your God’s name as if it were of no significance; the LORD won’t forgive anyone who uses his name that way.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day and treat it as holy. Six days you may work and do all your tasks, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. Do not do any work on it—not you, your sons or daughters, your male or female servants, your animals, or the immigrant who is living with you. Because the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and everything that is in them in six days, but rested on the seventh day. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
  5. Honor your father and your mother so that your life will be long on the fertile land that the LORD your God is giving you.
  6. Do not kill.
  7. Do not commit adultery.
  8. Do not steal.
  9. Do not testify falsely against your neighbor.
  10. Do not desire your neighbor’s house. Do not desire and try to take your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox, donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.
